Multi-national, gargantuan companies all over the world have at last understood that global warming is not something mad scientists are broadcasting just to get their 15 minutes of fame. This is reality and needs to be addressed by each and every major and minor player in the industry. The international air freight industry is also expected to contribute their bit to a greener and healthier planet. It is a very well known fact that the carbon emissions figures in 2006 were reading about 25 billion tones, out of which about 7% is contributed by cargo airlines. It is therefore the duty of every freight air shipping company to see that these figures are checked and reversed.

The international air freight companies are in the middle of the environmental protection controversies; they have agreed and have announced that they will enter into an agreement to contribute compulsorily for projects that protect the environment all over the world.

The amount that is earmarked for this purpose has not been fixed, though the agreement stipulates that it should be proportionate to the number of freight services that each cargo airline offers. Europe organized and spearheaded its efforts through the Kyoto Protocol Agreement, which states that the participating countries are committed to bringing down the carbon emission by 2012. USA was conspicuous by its absence at this momentous event.

While it is excellent that the major players, such as international air freight companies, have included environmental issues on their high priority agendas, many are of the opinion that such measures are not enough today. The need of the day is not to pay money for others to do the dirty work, but to get it done themselves. Each of the member cargo airlines should ensure that their airplanes operate optimally to keep the carbon emissions of each airline to a minimum.

The need of the day is action, action and more action. The international air freight companies are required to aggressively follow a path that leads to a greener and healthier environment. While indirect contributions to green projects are laudable efforts, more commitment to the cause is expected from the cargo airlines. The Kyoto Protocol Agreement is an excellent example of how the major players can commit and work towards reversing the damage done to the environment.
